The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday commercial created using Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant public disapproval.

The brief film was produced via generative AI clips and was originally released online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, audiences online lambasted the use of AI in the film. Many described it as "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This incident serves as an key lesson as we examine the proper application of generative technology," stated a statement from the company.

The advert was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of scenarios that might go awry over the Christmas break, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Movement of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that include AI-created content have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among large companies, particularly for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly released back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos produced using current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be about short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also sparked worries about job displacement in the advertising industry, with some observers stating it could affect work for production staff.

Response from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

She stated, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then edited during the edit "just as we would on any standard production".

"This was not an experiment," she commented. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the response for some AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, other businesses have also encountered scrutiny for employing the technique in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "cheap" and "uncanny".

The episode highlights the continuing discussion within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between technological innovation and creative integrity.
